AIMODO: Accelerating Eco-Friendly Product Design with AI
Artificial Intelligence assisted Mold Design Optimization
Plus Science is an innovative educational technology company that designs and produces eco-friendly STEM kits and educational toys aimed at inspiring the next generation of learners. Committed to sustainability and hands-on learning, the company integrates science, creativity, and environmental responsibility into every product.
Through the AIMODO experiment, Plus Science adopted AI-assisted design tools to optimize product development workflows. The goal was to reduce material usage and accelerate the prototyping process - allowing the company to remain both environmentally conscious and highly responsive to market needs.
Sustainable Educational Product Design
AI-assisted development and rapid prototyping
- Address limitations of existing CAD software, which focus on individual part moldability rather than overall product and mold design integration;
- Optimizing part and mold design to reduce cost and development time while ensuring high-performance parts;
- Conversion of STL files to STL point clouds;
- Identification and management of key design constraints;
- Implementation of design optimization techniques through Genetic Algorithms.
Designers upload STL files and define constraints such as segment dimensions, compactness, and similarity through a user-friendly web application. STL files are converted to point clouds and an Unsupervised Machine Learning KMeans Clustering and Machine Vision Algorithm is implemented, leading to optimised redesigned parts.
The optimization results are visualised as sliced parts of the whole toy for molding providing designers with actionable insights to improve their workflows.
- 27 % Reduction in the Number of Molds Required:
- Improved digital design processes minimized the number of physical molds needed, reducing material waste and production overhead.
- 68 % Reduction in Design Time:
- The working version of the AIMODO software cut design time from 45 hours to just 14.4 hours, dramatically accelerating product development and time-to-market.
Encouraged by the results, Plus Science aims to integrate AI into additional stages of its product development workflow, enabling faster iteration and greater design flexibility. The company also plans to adapt the solution for new educational kits and materials, reinforcing its sustainability goals by minimizing resource consumption.
Over time, this AI-driven approach could become central to their innovation strategy in the edtech space.
